A TINY STEP
By M.J.Waldock – 4/10
It only takes a tiny step
To cause a change
And have no regrets
First is the idea, for which toy
The fear and the doubt
Then the rush of joy
To laugh and cry
To Say Goodby
To ideas that halt us so
Open your heart
To a day renewed
It is just the start
To a life that’s yours
Forever more
A tiny step to help you soar

Change is one of he most difficult things we do. We want something to be different, ie:
• Be Thinner • More successful • Have more Fun
• Be Loved • Gain Peace of Mind
And the list goes on.
But why don’t we make these changes? We have the power to do anything we choose, and yet we operate under the umbrella of insanity - “doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome.”
A friend of mine once said, “It is the “RC” factor that stops us – Resistance to change. A fear of the unknown.
Change is good, particularly when we are the initiator. The most common change in today’s environment, particularly for women, is losing weight. It’s everywhere! Pick up any magazine and you will find a headline on the cover, “how to lose 10 lbs in 5 days. “ As we are rapidly approaching summer and bikini season, the weight loss articles are rampant. We are obsessed with our weight and yet we live in a country with skyrocketing obesity.
I was in a conversation about weight with a friend just the other day. She and I have both participated in the “Accu Bead” diet and both lost 25 lbs within two months. Although it is a restricted diet, it is very fast, short-lived, and it works. We both need to drop 15 lbs, and remarked how great we felt and looked. So why don’t we just do it? As the Doctor who administered the program used to say - “Take it one tiny step at a time and one day at a time.
That’s great advice. Just one tiny step!
Last Monday I declared that I was going to go back on the bead diet. I have the beads behind my ears, but I am not truly committed to the diet. For those of you who may not have heard of this diet, tiny acupressure beads are placed behind your ears to help curb your appetite and keep our metabolism from slowing down. In addition to the limited food intake, you rub the beads every two hours. It is certainly not difficult and it does work. It can’t be that I don’t value the outcome, because I really love clothes and getting dressed up. Nor can it be that I just love to eat because I’m not out there eating gourmet meals every night. Maybe it is the fear of success – what a terrible thought.
Change is what I need in my own life, what about you? I need to re-design it. So I ask myself some very hard questions, what do I really want? My life is filled with many wonderful things….good health, a great husband, a loving mother, a beautiful home, friends, opportunity, and great abundance all around. So what is it? What do I really want for me?
I love being on stage and empowering women, and I have thought about re-establishing the Because We Are Women events, or some aspect of them. As successful as they have been, in 2008 when the economy was taking a nosedive, the stress of producing the event was unbearable. I also like to write and started a book several years ago. The question is will I ever finish it? A friend of mine offered to help by making me accountable for her for my progress. She suggested that I just write two hours a day and then send her the copy. For some reason I just can’ t wrap my head around it and put my nose to the grindstone.
My hope is that writing this blog will help me and hopefully you, sort out some of my thoughts to get a clearer picture of the road ahead.
What do you want for you? Have you ever been in this place and if so, what did you do to create a new path?
Can’t wait to hear back from you. I the meantime, I am going to rub the beads, and try to take a harder look at my fear of success. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Have a wonderful day.
Hope you enjoy this poem. Change is on the way.
Great poem! Someone once said to me that change is the one constant in this world however true growth is optional. Whenever I something great before me or an opportunity to make changes I ask myself what is holding me back. This is a self coaching technique I’ve adopted. I write down all of the obstacles/roadblocks that I see that are keeping me from the things that I want and I tackle them one at a time until I believe I can make the changes necessary to have the things that I want in life.
Amber, thank you so much for the response. I also saw your note on Facebook, I will contact you. Look forward to connecting. I am compiling my list.
A good friend of mine sent this to me – please take a moment to watch up.

I found your statement: “Change is good, especially when we are the initiator” to be very thought provoking. I would like to add that change can be good even when we are NOT the initiator – it just takes longer to process and accept. I recently had some huge changes in my life: the death of my husband, a change in career, and accepting that I needed to sell my house and let go of so much pressure. I resisted accepting them.
As I confronted them one by one, and worked through my anger at having to do these things, I realized that the anger and fear could be my guiding star or I could choose to let go of them and chart a new course.
Once I let go, I was able to see my path and all of the good things that I could bring into my new life.
I will always miss the love of my life but he is still very much a part of who I am. My decision to go back to Hospice nursing after a 22 year absence has brought me great joy and satisfaction. And selling my house and renting a townhouse is giving me new freedom – from responsibility, debt and pressure.
Sometimes when life gives us lemons, we need to make lemonade…..and then find out who got the vodka and have a party!!!
Thank you Marie. What a wonderful, inspiring story. Where’s the party?
Are you having difficulty making changes in your life? Here is something that I came across in my journal. This could be a great way to get started.
I woke up this morning and looked outside. It was a beautiful day. The air was crisp, the sun was bright, the birds were chirping. I took a deep breath and decided that this was the first day of the rest of my life and I was facing the future with Gusto. Today I can be anything I choose.
What color were the flowers? Where did your muse take you? You can manifest anything, just dream it big.
The color of our flower is Purple which means—Spirituality, royalty, mystery, wisdom, transformation, independence, enlightenment, respect, wealth.
A rose is a source of inspiration to people throughout history, roses are the definitive symbol for love and appreciation.
What are you doing today?
One of the quote I love about change is “It’s not what we do once in a while, it’s what we do everyday that counts.” It’s kept me motivated this year.
Vanice, How True. And when we want to make changes in our lives, we must do things until they become a habit. There is an Og Mandino wrote a book, or several, entitled “The Greatest Salesman”. In the book is says, do something for a month and it will become a habit.
We must develop habits that help us become who we want to be and get what we deserve and desire in life.
Thanks for your comment.
Hi Marlene, this is a powerfully inspiring poem! I was very moved as I read it… I acknowledge change as one of the few constants in our lives and I embrace it. Sometimes more willingly than other times but always with a very open and flexible spirit.
Thanks for sharing.
